National Unity : Transcending Ethnic Differences

The 52rd edition of the National Unity Day offers Cameroonians from across the board to evaluate the path covered and seek ways of staying together, challenges notwithstanding.

The theme for the 52rd edition of the National Unity Day is: "Army and Nation: Together for a United, Peaceful and Prosperous Cameroon." To that effect, activities nationwide making the commemoration of the day will be around the theme decided by the President of the Republic, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. A march past on May 20 across the national territory will crown commemorative activities and it will be a moment for Cameroonians to consolidate ideals of unity, territorial integrity and social cohesion. 
In view of the theme, it can be said that it will also be a moment of communion between the population and its army, who are now one in the process of building a Cameroon that looks towards the path of its emergence in peace and unity. Indeed, gone are the days when civilians used to be in fear at the sight of uniformed officers. Today, the two collaborate and live in peace and harmony, for the wellbeing of the nation. 
Defence and security officers have remained in line with their sovereign missions which is working to preserve the territorial integrity of the Fatherland and protecting people and their property, but have also become a key player for the economic and social development of our country in recent times. This is undoubtedly the result of the professionalization that was initiated by the major reforms introduced by President Paul Biya. Through specialized structures such as the Military Engineering Corps, the Cameroonian army is increasingly involved in road construction operations, public buildings, and other infrastructure not only being used by the military. Every region in the country has at least a stretch of road rehabilitated or asphalted by the military corp. Their actions help in facilitating transportation and reduces the number of accidents or damages on cars.  The Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) also carries out similar actions especially in the South West and North West regions, and other crisis affected communities in the country. There are equally schools constructed in the country by the army and opened to civilians for education.
