West: Over 60 Tons Of Plastic Waste Collected

Bafoussam (Mifi Division): Some 60 tons of plastic waste (bottles) have been collected from the streets of Bafoussam, by the Bafoussam City Council in their drive to eliminate its harmful effects and extreme environmental risks. The Ba­ foussam City Mayor announced that, in late 2021, the City Council launched an operation, known as “Zero plastic bottles and plastic bags”, with the aim of protecting and cleaning Ba­ foussam of plastic waste, its adverse effect on human health and environmental risk that causes widespread envi­ ronmental degradation, that re­ sults to significant health risk to the population. Mayor Tafam Roger, was spea­ king in Bafoussam, on 17 July 2026, to announce some new measures taken by the City Council to accelerate and make a vigorous enforcement of the collection campaign. According to the City Mayor, the first ac­ tion is the direct engagement of the population in the project, through the quarter heads, tra­ ditional authorities, who will in­ tend talk to the population about the need for an impera­ tive change of habits. He said the campaign has been carried out in schools, with po­ sitive results, adding that some 90 students were trained on how to educate the public on good habits of handling plastic waste, and on the approach to replicate the collection in the Bafoussam city. Tafam, said as an act of incentive, the city council is offering 60FCFA, for one kilogram of plastic collec­ ted by anybody, noting that the collection is mostly done by wo­ men and children.
