Yaounde : Qualification Euphoria Grips Population

From the start of the match till the final whistle anxious supporters were glued to TV screens following every move of the game.

It was a thrilling evening for Yaounde inhabitants as the Indomitable Lions sailed through to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Prior to yesterday’s victory, many fans had wondered whether their darling team would qualify for the World Cup given their 0-1 defeat to the Desert Foxes during the first leg qualifier that took place at the Japoma Stadium in Douala on March 25, 2022. From the start of the match till the final whistle anxious supporters were glued to their TV screens following every move of the game.
As from 6:00 p.m., many fans could be seen in the different neigbourhoods, city centre and work places looking for a place to watch the encounter. The streets were almost empty as many people had gone home to watch the match. Commercial taxi drivers and motorcycle riders parked their vehicles to watch the game. With the absence of the giant screens and fan zones in the city as was the case during the AFCON, fans watched the game in bars, drinking spots, shops and even in offices.
At the Nkoldongo main junction, many fans jammed bars in the area just to have a glimpse of the Lions playing. As they watched, they cheered the players and even gave instructions to the players as if they were on the pitch with them. As the match dragged on to extra time, fans were discouraged especially with the goal of the Algerians.
