Literacy Day : Cameroonians Called To Embrace Linguistic Diversity

The day was observed last Friday in Yaounde, two weeks after the official commemoration.
Many people are hindered on their personnel growth because of their inability to read or write. However, these people have skills that can be developed to help them fight against unemployment and crime, while contributing to the development of the country. It is within this context that Cameroon observed the 2019 International Literacy Day on Friday, September 20, 2019 with focus on people learning as many local languages as possible for an effective integration in the community. The day was commemorated under the theme: “Literacy and Multilingualism.”
While presiding over events at the Ministry of Basic Education, the Secretary General, Paul Ebune Tiku, on behalf of the Minister of Basic Education, said events centred on literacy within the framework of the right to education as the foundation for individual empowerment, inclusive and sustainable development. “It gives us the opportunity to rethink the fundamental importance of our African languages in all their diversity and richness,” Paul Ebune noted. He explained that his ministry is doing much in encouraging the population without any formal education to come together, learn and develop capacities so as to join other Cameroonians towards an emergent country. He said through various centres, Cameroonians from all age groups are being taught national languages which help them develop competences.
