Professor Jean Marie Kasia, General Manager, Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgery and Human Reproductive Teaching Hospital (CHRACERH).
What is particular about CHRACERH at such a moment?
We are celebrating the 4th anniversary of the hospital since its inauguration by the First Lady, Mrs Chantal Biya, on May 6, 2016. Coincidently, today we are witnessing the delivery of three babies: triplets. This is a very good day for us and a very happy birthday. That which is important is that this celebration is coming at the period of the Covid-19 pandemic. But this does not mean we should be sad. This just present the cycle of life; this is about birth and death. At the moment, we have people who are dying and we have compassion for them. However, we have to celebrate birth because life has to continue.
How was the pregnancy of the triplets achieved?
The pregnancy was obtained via In Vitrio Fertilisation (IVF). The lady already has three children in her first marriage. In her current marriage, she was having difficulties getting pregnant. The process to deliver these babies has not been easy especially towards the end of the pregnancy. Having three babies in the stomach is not easy. The pressure is enormous. With such pressure, there is always the risk of premature birth. Before the end of the pregnancy, we had to keep the lady in the hospital for two weeks, since we were afraid she could give birth prematurely. But the lady was cooperative and the babies were delivered successfully. The lady is 33 years old. Now, she has put to birth a set of triplets making a total of six children under her care. At 33 years old, we could have taken the risk of blocking her tubes, since she already has six children. This is usually the case in other situations. But we have not blocked her tubes. We are hoping that if something happens in the future and she wants to have more children, she will be free to have through other possibilities.
What measures has the hospital taken in the midst of Covid-19?
