North West : Media Trained To Mainstream Gender

Civil society organisation, 'Beacon of Light Association' inspires practicing journalists in the North West to seek and report stories and perspectives of women in the prevention of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Journalists in the North West region on May 13, 2020 took home lessons that leverage on the unique needs of women and girls in the fight against the threatening coronavirus pandemic. The event was the training of media practitioners on mainstreaming gender in the reporting of Covid-19. Convinced that matters are not helped by stereotypes, stigmatization and misrepresentation, the training inspired journalists to amplify the voices of women, portray their role in the pandemic and above all, report their stories and perspectives.
It was all about life saving news reporting with a focus on women and girls. Beacon of Light Association (BeLA), the civil society organization that builds safe spaces in collaboration with 'Urgent Action Fund Africa', are to thank for the event that inspires women, youths and the society to stay safe. It was against this backdrop that the CEO of BeLA, Yekpu Eleen Ndze urged journalists to provide diverse accounts of needs, perspectives and voices of society at a moment when the North West region features over 20 confirmed cases of covid-19 with the impact exacerbated for women and girls because of their sex and the burden of care giving.
The stakes are indeed high and the Regional Delegate of Women Empowerment and the Family, Wirba Arsan, hailed the Beacon of Light Association for the training to step up action against covid-19 in a region where minorities and IDPs escaping violence have another challenge to be covid-19 free.
