Hearing of the case against Lamine Diack, former president of athletics' world governing body went underway in Paris on Monday, June 8, 2020.
The trial of the Lamine Diack, the erstwhile president of the IAAF began on Monday June 8, 2020 in Paris. Reports say the 87-year-old Senegalese Sport man made his first appearance in court in a worrying health condition.
Lamine Diack was President of the International Association of Athletics' Federations (now World Athletics) for 16 years until he was replaced by Britain's Lord Coe in August 2015. He was arrested in 2015 on the grounds of corruption charges and has been in the country since then. Lamine Diack faces corruption and money-laundering charges linked to the Russian doping scandal. He has been under house arrest in Paris since November 2015. The landmark trial is scheduled to run for the next two weeks. Diack denies the charges, but if found guilty he could face up to 10 years in jail.
