National Blood Transfusion Centre : Prof Dora Mbanya To Spearhead Excellence

A presidential decree of July 3, 2020 appoints her as the Director General of the National Blood Transfusion Centre in Cameroon.

Mrs Mbanya, née Dora Ngum Shu, Professor of Haematology is now the Director General of the National Blood Transfusion Centre in Cameroon. The Presidential Decree No 2020/370 of July 3, 2020 takes the seasoned haematologist to the helm of the Blood Transfusion Centre in Cameron. Her appointment has been seen by many as “a square peg in a square hole”. Given that, she is a trained haematologist in the field of blood transfusion and blood-related diseases. Before her appointment last Friday, Professor Dora Mbanya was the Head of the Haematology and Transfusion Service of the Yaounde University Teaching Hospital, a service that also lodges the Haemophilia Treatment Centre of the country, while coordinating satellite centres.
The ever-smiling Prof Dora with a remarkable gap-tooth is a “young girl” that hails from the North West Region. Born on December 13, 1956, she attended primary and secondary schooling in Buea and Victoria, now Limbe (Saker Baptist College) respectively and later went on to attend the Cameroon College of Arts, Science and Technology where she obtained the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level. She then proceeded to do University studies in the University of Yaounde, from where she graduated as a Medical Doctor in 1982, from the then University Centre for Health Sciences (CUSS). After four years of practice as a General Practitioner here at home, she got admission into the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, in the UK, where she obtained a PhD in Haematology from the Department of Medicine. She also obtained a “Diplome Universitaire” in Transfusion Medicine.
