30 January-An African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, elects Chadian President, Idriss Deby, as African Union Chairman. He replaced Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe.
7 April - The Central African Republic is readmitted to the African Union. The country was suspended for three years after the overthrow of President François Bozizé in March 2013.
30 May - Chadian ex-ruler, Hissene Habré, is convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to life imprisonment in Senegal. He was convicted him of rape, sexual slavery and killings during his rule from 1982 to 1990.
10 June - The European Union and six countries of the Southern African Development Community, SADC, sign an economic partnership agreement in Kasane, Botswana.
9 July - Violence breaks out in the South Sudanese capital, Juba, on the fifth independence anniversary. Troops involved were those loyal to President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar.
16 August - The African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia jails nine Ugandan soldiers serving with it. They were accused of pursuing personal interest and endangering operational efficiency.
