2021 AIBA World Boxing Championships : Poor Showing For Cameroonians

The three Cameroonian flagbearers Onana Ngah Jean Marie, Mengue Ayissi Albert and Yegnong Maxime were knocked out in the first round of the competition.

Cameroonian athletes have been booted out of the ongoing 2021 edition of the AIBA World Boxing Championships at the Stark Arena in Belgrade, Serbia. Organised by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) the competition brings together 367 boxers from 84 countries in the world. Out of that number 12 countries are from Africa. Three boxers represented Cameroon in the competition. They are Onana Ngah Jean Marie (67kg), Mengue Ayissi Albert (71kg) and Yegnong Maxime (+92kg). 
Reports say all the three Cameroonian boxers were eliminated in the first fight of the competition. Onana Ngah Jean Marie for example lost his fight by the stoppage of the referee. His opponent was stronger than him. The coach, Alain Didier Ngatcha said the team did not prepare well before leaving the country. “There was no real internal training camp as compared to 2017 when we participated in the World Championship in Hamburg, Germany,” he said. He said from his point of view it is the instability of the technical supervision that hindered the performance of the boxers. During the last World Championship in Germany Cameroon won bronze through Arsene Fokou in the +94kg category. That was the only African medal in that World Boxing Championship.
