Regional Councils : Executive Bureaus Make One Year in Office

Saturday, January 22, 2022 made exactly one year since the executive bureaus of the Regional Councils and executive bureaus of the Regional Assemblies as is the case in the two English –speaking North West and South West Regions that have a Special Status effectively started work.
Regional Governors of each of the Regions following the instructions of the President of the Republic contained in a note signed by the Minister of Decentralisation and Local Development, Georges Elanga Obam on January 4, 2021, presided at the commissioning of the executive bureaus of the Regional Councils into their duties On Friday, January 22, 2021. The commissioning ceremonies that enabled the Regional Councils executives to effectively start work was the culmination of an eventful procedure. This started with the election of the pioneer Regional Councillors in Cameroon on December 6, 2020. On December 22, 2020, the Regional Councillors for each regions held their sessions as of right during which the executive bureaus were elected. The election did not automatically qualify them to start work immediately as following the provisions of the Electoral Code, they had to be sworn-in in an Administrative Court. That aspect of the procedure following the note of the Minister of Decentralisation and Local Development took place latest January 15, 2021.
Throughout the year 2021, different steps were taken to ensure the effective implantation of the Regions as local authorities. Government appointed the Secretaries General, Treasurers and other officials. Members of the executives were trained and towards the end the year each Regional Council voted the 2022 Budget and drew up Regional Development Plans. Some of them started working to meet the development needs of the population.
