South West : Vaccination Begins Against Cholera

The campaign follows recurrent cases of cholera recorded in 92 communities within the region of recent.

The population of Bakassi, Ekondo-Titi, Mbonge and Mundemba Health Districts have begun receiving their first doses of cholera vaccines. Administered orally on anybody above one year of age, the first round of cholera vaccines were launched on Friday, February 18, 2022, after a meeting that took place at the South West Regional Delegation of Public Health in Buea.
Launching the campaign for free vaccination, the South West Regional Delegate of Public Health, Dr. Eko Eko Filbert, said since October 27, 2021, when the first cases of cholera were reported, six health districts in the South West Region have been affected with about 1,137 cumulative cases, 31 deaths and a fatality rate of 3 per cent, reason for the emergency response by the Ministry of Public Health and its partners.
‘‘We are trying to use all possible strategies to curb the number of cases. For a long time, we have not recorded any cases of deaths. The campaign launched is directed towards the first four districts that were affected. The consignment gotten from partners targeted those particular districts since the programme of vaccination was launched before the other districts were affected,’’ Dr. Eko Filbert said.
