Russio-Ukrainian Conflict: Escalation On The Ground

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a military assault on neighbouring Ukraine.

Early yesterday morning Russian troops crossed Ukraine’s borders bombing military targets near big cities. Russia’s military entered Ukraine through the north, south and east, including from Belarus. The invasion marks a major escalation in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. The campaign was preceded by a prolonged Russian military buildup since early 2021, and demands by Russia to legally prohibit Ukraine from joining NATO. The US and several European countries have in the past weeks multiplied diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the issue, but without any viable compromise.
In Russia, the official as well as pro-government media do support Putin’s assessment that Russia had no choice but to respond to Ukrainian “aggression”, by crippling Ukraine’s military defence capability while avoiding civilian casualties.
