Gov’t Subsidy To Private Communication : 95 Files Under Scrutiny

The Minister of Communication, Rene Emmanuel Sadi has called on the Commission members to be flexible and objective in selecting eligible media organs.

Members of the National Commission for the Scrutiny of Applications for State Institutional Support to Privately-Owned Press Organs met on Friday, February 25, 2022 during their third session to examine the files of 95 private media organs. Among them, 84 print media and 11 online press companies. Opening the session was the chairperson of the commission, the Minister of Communication, Rene Emmanuel Sadi.
Speaking to the Commission members, the Minister reiterated that the session, holding within the 2021 financial year could not have taken place earlier because of the persistence of the Coronavirus pandemic and the security crisis in the North West and South West Regions. According to the minister, these issues have considerable repercussions on the economy and negatively influenced the process to disburse funds allocated as subsidy to private communication.
The Minister of Communication also noted that the Africa Cup of Nations Football tournament, which the country hosted, also slowed the process for the government to allocate funds to private media organs. However, Rene Emmanuel Sadi lauded the media coverage of the competition. He used the session to convey his congratulations to private media practitioners for the work they did throughout the sporting event, which allowed the populations to witness such a beautiful competition in real time, and also countering all attempts to misinform and damage the image of the country during the event. “The media coverage of AFCON TotalEnergies Cameroon 2021 has contributed to give our country more visibility at the international level and created a worldwide popular excitement, so much so that the organisation of the competition is now positioned as one of the most successful in the world, according to the Confederation of African Football (CAF)”, the Minister of Communication underlined.
