Professor Dora Mbanya : Haematologist For Community’s Welfare

She is the pioneer General Manager of Cameroon’s National Blood Transfusion Service.

Professor Dora Mbanya is a lady with a remarkable career. Born on December 13, 1956, she hails from the North West Region. She is a physician, more specifically a haematologist. As Vice President of the Cameroon Society of Haematology and Blood Transfusion, she is part of the professional body in the country that sets norms in the management of blood and blood disorders in Cameroon. Prof. Dora Mbanya is also the President of the Africa Society for Blood Transfusion (AfSBT), an international association that sets norms and standards that cater for blood safety throughout the African Region and beyond. Being the pioneer General Manager of Cameroon’s National Blood Transfusion Service, she is mandated to coordinate blood transfusion activities through the national territory. The mother of many children is married to Jean Claude Mbanya who is also a Professor of Medicine and Endocrinology.
Prof. Dora Mbanya is not just involved in haematological issues. She heads the Cameroon Branch of the Africa Society for Women and AIDS in Africa (SWAA), an international non-governmental organisation (NGO) created in 1988 in Zimbabwe. The NGO focuses on the sensitisation and education of the rural and urban woman, as well as the youths, on HIV/AIDS and its consequences. “I am an active member of the Cameroon Medical Women’s Association (CMWA), a professional NGO that looks into the general health of the Cameroonian woman,” Prof. Dora reveals.
As a physician, Professor Dora Mbanya says her medical services are towards the population as a whole. Nevertheless, she has made some specific contributions to national health and policies at the level of the Ministry of Public Health and the National AIDs Control Committee
