All five qualifiers played the two-legged playoffs to secure their tickets for the World Cup. The playoffs appeared to be beneficial as the away goals rule enabled countries like Cameroon and Ghana to sail through to the World Cup.
Cameroon beat Algeria 2-1 at the Mustapha Tchaker Stadium in Blida. Ahmed Touba scored in the 118th minute. Cameroon was near elimination but the Lions came up stronger four minutes of added time into extra time as Karl Toko Ekambi scored the winning goal. In the other playoffs, Senegal beat Egypt 3-1 through penalties after the match ended 1-1 at the Cairo International Stadium. Egypt had won the first leg 1-0 but lost the second by the same score after extra time.
