Rugby Sevens : Targeting Many Cameroonian Youths

Even though rugby sevens has only been introduced recently in the country, the sports discipline is making Cameroon proud in the international scene.

One of the sports disciplines that are targeting many young Cameroonians today is the Rugby Sevens. Rugby sevens commonly known as simply sevens and originally known as seven-a-side rugby is a variant of rugby union in which teams are made up of seven players playing seven-minute halves, instead of the usual 15 players playing 40-minute halves. Rugby sevens is administered by World Rugby, the body responsible for rugby union worldwide. The game is popular at all levels, with amateur and club tournaments generally held in the summer months. Sevens is one of the most well distributed forms of rugby, and is popular in parts of Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas, and especially in the South Pacific. 
In Cameroon, rugby sevens is still new as far as the discipline is concerned. Even though rugby sevens has only been introduced recently, many young Cameroonians are already getting interested in the sport. The men’s and women’s national rugby sevens teams participated in the Rugby Sevens World Cup qualifiers that took place in Burundi on March 12 to 13, 2022. The Lionesses finished second on the classification table behind Zambia. The result however does not permit the women’s team to qualify for the Women’s World Cup in Tunisia.
