“Administrative Tolerance Makes Control Less Strict”

In spite of the many actions carried out to curb road accidents in the country, there seems to be little or no success. What could be the reason for the rampant accidents on our roads?
Your observations are justified and this is not only the case of Cameroon. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), no country has reached the objective of reducing by half in the last 10 years, the rate of road accidents. In Cameroon, many actors are engaged in curbing road accidents both in the private and public sectors, but the results are still below expectations. There are many things to blame; deficit in financing road safety actions, the absence of coordination by actors whose objectives do not always align with the national strategies and the inability to produce road safety data which should give the exact degree of the disasters caused along our highways. Above all these reasons linked to the management of road safety, we also have operational reasons. Authorities exercise a lot of administrative tolerance which makes control measures less strict. With this, we can note that 40 per cent of cars are not in conformity with the rules and regulation in force. Negligence is also seen among transport agencies. The issue of drivers disrespecting road safety rules is a crucial problem. More than half of driving schools do not respond to the regulations on the aspect of didactic materials and trainers.
Excessive speed is a major contributing factor to road accidents. Speed check radars are placed only in particular areas on the road and can only function on those areas. What can be done to systematically place these radars on many other areas along the road and at what intervals?
