Sickle Cell Anaemia : Free Medical Consultation For Patients

This is taking place at the Yaounde Central Hospital as a prelude to the World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, next June 19, 2022.

Sickle cell patients in Yaounde and beyond are currently undertaking medical check-up in some hospitals in Yaounde. This is within sensitisation activities to commemorate the 14th World Sickle Cell Day next June 19, under the theme, “Sickle Cell Disorder: Importance of Self Care.” In Cameroon, events are taking place within the framework of the 8th National Sickle Cell Information and Awareness Week under the theme, “Sickle Cell Disease and Reproduction.”
Yesterday, June 15, 2022, at the Yaounde Central Hospital, Lydie Ze Meka, President of Cameroon's National Association for the Protection of Sickle Cell Patients said her association, Convergence Drepanocytose and the Cameroon Study Group of  Medical Experts carrying out research on Sickle Cell (GEDREPACAM), are organising free medical consultation for sickle cell patients in Yaounde among other activities such as blood donation, fitness walk and educative talks.
At the Yaounde Central Hospital yesterday, June 15, 2022, several sickle cell patients were seen moving from one medical department to another, to undertake medical examinations due to sickle cell complications. After registration at the Haematology ward, the patients were received at the Ear, Nose and Throat Department, as well as the Ophthalmology and Dentist wards of the hospital for a cross examination of their nasal system, ear, and eyes. Because it is expensive to consult specialists in certain medical fields, Lydie Ze Meka says they are out to give these patients an opportunity to receive medical care for the daily medical problems they face. She also cautioned parents to carry out a Haemoglobin Electrophoresis test on their newborn babies. This is to analyse haemoglobin in the red blood ...
