2022 Women’s AFCON : Tussle For Supremacy Begins

Twelve nations will start meeting in Morocco tomorrow July 2, 2022 in the quest for the most coveted trophy.

As from tomorrow July 2, 2022, the cities of Casablanca and Rabat in Morocco will begin celebrating continental football as they host matches of the 14th edition of the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The competition which spans right up to July 23, 2022, will be the first to host 12 teams. These 12 teams with different caps have been placed in three groups. The kicker of the competition will be given by a game pitting host nation Morocco and Burkina Faso of Group A at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports complex. Senegal and Uganda complete the list of teams in this group. Cameroon, Zambia, Tunisia and Togo constitute Group B meanwhile, defending champions Nigeria, has been pooled alongside South Africa, Burundi and Botswana in Group C.
Though the ball is round, the abovementioned teams are coming from different backgrounds and experiences as far as the competition is concerned. Having ruled Africa for a record nine times, Nigeria are outright favourites to win the competition. However, the likes of South Africa and Cameroon are understandably considered title challengers. Five-time runners-up South Africa follow Nigeria and they will be hoping to end their long wait for glory on the African stage in Morocco. African heavyweights Cameroon who are second in Africa as per the June FIFA ranking, are not pushovers when it comes to winning the title. They have emerged runners up four times and the Moroccan expedition may just be the lucky one for the Lionesses to bring home the trophy for the first time. But they will have to kick-off the competition buoyantly against Zambia on Sunday July 3, 2022 at the Mohamed V Stadium in Casablanca.
