Public Service : Great Need For Improvement

Government has embarked on the modernisation of the public service and a lot needs to be improved in the process.

The Minister of Public Service and Administrative Reform, Joseph LE in a recent press interview said government has for five years now embarked on the modernisation of the public service. The modernisation process, he said, consist of digitalisation in order to dematerialise and simplify the services with the objective of facilitating access to the services by users.
The modernisation of the public service is still bedevilled by improvement challenges.
Efficient Communication
The Public Service Minister mentioned part of the modernisation process to be the online verification and processing of files. Users of the public service in Cameroon are found in all the nooks and crannies of the country and many are not aware of the modern ways through which they can tract their files, submit complementary information when the documents in the files are incomplete. Many users do die of ignorance as they feel that they can only know the situation of their files when they come to the Ministry in Yaounde. The Regional Delegations of the Ministry of Public Service and Administrative Reform are there to facilitate access to services and help solve the problems of the users. Government therefore needs to intensify awareness creation campaigns using both modern and traditional methods in order to enable public service users to be armed with adequate information. Users need to know that they can use the e-mail, WhatsApp and other modern methods to seek for information and forward documents to required places.
Accelerate File Processing
Minister Joseph LE said that 16 out of the 18 services for which the public service is regularly solicited have been digitalised. Despite the dematerialisation efforts, he said they have discovered that some files are not advancing and upon verification it was discovered that 6,500 of them were incomplete. Digital technological is the way to success but the machines are manipulated by staff who must be dedicated to the job and demonstrate high patriotism. Files should not be kept in drawers to be processed only after some corruption acts must have transpired.
Update Equipment
Dematerialising the public service means the use of information and communication technologies....
