Disability : Awareness Prevention Campaign Launched

The nationwide operation seeks to carry out early screening and rehabilitation of people exposed to any form of disabilities.

The nationwide awareness campaign for the prevention of disabilities, early screening and the rehabilitation of disabled persons was launched on June 5, 2022 in Yaounde. Launching the campaign was the Secretary General in the Ministry of Social Affairs, Panje Beryl Itoh. She reiterated the need to prevent disabilities because they impede victims from fully participating in the development of their own lives. Eventually, they become burdensome socially and financially to their families.
Speaking at the Cardinal Paul Emile Leger National Rehabilitation Centre for People with Disabilities, CNRPH, at the Etoug-Ebe neighbourhood in Yaounde, the Secretary General said it is imperative to prevent any form of disability, whether it occurs through road accidents or illness. She revealed that the rise in the prevalence rate of disabilities is due to the global increase of illness such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension, polio, obesity or mental problems. Other causes of disability can also be as a result of work or road accidents, marital or intra-family problems. With regard to Law number 2010/002 of 13 April 2010, dedicated to the prevention of disabilities, Panje Beryl Itoh says that the Ministry of Social Affairs has as key mission to break barriers and mentalities of the population towards disabled persons as well as develop new strategies to help people curb the phenomenon.
