DR Congo-Rwanda Crisis : Presidents Tshisekedi, Kagame Hold Talks

The crucial tripartite talks took place in Luanda and chaired by Angola’s President, João Lourenço, who doubles as AU mediator.

The President of the Democratic Republic, President Felix Tshisekedi and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame have held a tripartite meeting in Angola’s capital Luanda. At the end of the meeting that took place on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, under the auspices of the host country’s President and African Union appointed mediator, João Lourenço, both leaders agreed on a process of de-escalating the tense situation between the two countries. The de-escalation is expected to be achieved gradually through what they termed as Luanda roadmap.
The roadmap further stipulates a desire to normalize diplomatic relations between Kinshasa and Kigali, provide the immediate cessation of hostilities and the return of refugees to their country of origin. A statement posted on Twitter after the summit by the Congolese presidency, states that, the agreement also includes, the retreat of M23 fighters from Congo, while a Rwanda-Congo Commission that had previously been dormant will meet again in Luanda on July 12, 2022.
