Elections Cameroon : Electoral Board Members Sworn-in

The President of the Constitutional Council, Clement Atangana, presided at the swearing-in event on July 26, 2022.

Members of the Electoral Board of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) whose mandates were recently renewed and those who were newly appointed, have taken their oath of office. Comprising the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and members of the said Board, they were sworn-in on July 26, 2022 during a public audience presided at by the President of the Constitutional Council, Clement Atangana. The swearing-in ceremony is in accordance with Section 12(6) of the Electoral Code. 
Standing before the Court, with their right hands lifted up, each of the members beginning from the Chairperson, took turns to recite the words; “I swear to fully and faithfully discharge my duties and to exercise my office without fear or favour in accordance with the Constitution and laws in force, to ensure the confidentiality of proceedings and votes, to abstain from taking public positions and to decline any consultation on matters falling within the purview of Elections Cameroon.” After taking the oath, members of the Electoral Board, who are eighteen in number, (Chairperson and Vice Chairperson inclusive), by virtue of the office they hold, are expected to be impartial in their different decisions. The swearing-in ushers the members of various backgrounds into a four-year mandate which according to Article 13(1) of the Electoral Code, only comes to an end in the event of death, resignation or the non-renewal of the term of office.
Still in conformity with the Electoral Code, the aforementioned Board has the duty to ensure compliance with the electoral law by all stakeholders for the purpose of guaranteeing regular, impartial, free, fair, transparent and credible polls.
