Bilingualism Interferences : Lukewarm Attitudes In Some Administrations

Late arrival of articles for translation, poor equipment of translation units and shying from making errors in the other language account for the limited bilingualism practice in the country.

Cameroon being a bilingual country according to its Constitution, obliges the systematic production of documents in the two official languages. Unfortunately, the law that institutes the publication of bilingual documents in English and French is not being respected by all. 
Late arrival of speeches and other official declarations to be made by personalities have an impact on the final availability of the document in the other language. Most of the translators in the ministries note that they receive the document within a short timeframe before its public declaration and find it difficult meeting up with time translating it, reason it is first published in one language before the other version is made available. Again, they argue that they do not want to rush over the document and make mistakes, justifying why another version is made available days after the initial version was published. 
The lukewarm attitude exhibited by some officials in the communication and translation units of some public institutions towards another language is worrisome. You are either ignored or treated poorly when you express yourself in the second language of an official in a ministry. In most cases, bilingualism is pushed to the public service user (people wanting the information), and not at the official (person having the information which should be communicated). 
Posters affixed on doors indicating the post of responsibility of an official in most ministries are unfortunately still in one language.
