Banking Sector: Ph.D Thesis Castigates Customer Exploitation

The e-banking findings were presented by Akame Winslow Melle that earned him a Ph.D degree in the University of Buea on July 28, 2022.

Information Communication Technology has fostered the growth of the e-banking sector and Cameroon is not left out. The advancement in technology and telecommunication has made it possible for many banks to network their various branches and operations thereby making the one-branch philosophy a reality. Compliance with COBAC standards is still problematic especially with difficulties faced in the enforcement of these standards. Technology is fast growing in a geometric rate while the law is almost growing but in an arithmetic rate. The weak compliance carries profound negative and far-reaching consequences on especially the users. This is the findings that Akame Winslow Melle presented on the theme, “The Compliance of Cameroonian Banks with COBAC Standards on the Legal Protection of Electronic Banking Users” that earned him a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Law from the Faculty of Law and Political Science in the University of Buea.
The session on Thursday July 28, 2022, at the Dorothy Limunga Njuema Amphitheatre was chaired by Prof. Atangcho Nji Akonumbo. It has Prof. Mbifi Richard as Rapporteur I, Prof Nkongho Elizabeth as Rapporteur II, Prof. Sunkam Achilles as Member and Prof. Irene Dione Fokum Samalang as Supervisor. In his presentations, Akame Winslow Melle critically appraised the extent to which the legal, policy and institutional frameworks of Cameroonian banks comply with COBAC standards as well assessed the dispute resolution mechanisms in the digital era.
