Islamic Solidarity Games : Cameroon Grabs 14 Medals

The athletes won two gold, six silver and six bronze in the competition that ended yesterday August 18, 2022 in Konya, Turkey.

The 5th Islamic Solidarity Games rounded off in Konya, Turkey, yesterday August 18, 2022. A total of 4, 200 athletes from 56 countries took part in this year’s edition of the games. For ten days, the athletes competed in 24 sports disciplines in 13 different sports venues in the city of Konya. Close to 2,000 volunteers were mobilised to accompany the delegations to the different competition venues. At the end of the competition, Turkey finished on the top spot with 127 gold medals. Cameroon occupied the 15th position with 14 medals; two gold, six silver and six bronze. With that result, Cameroon has improved on its position as compared to the previous edition in Baku; Azerbaijan in 2017. 
Cameroon’s medal harvest began early in the competition with Sarah Hanffou winning a bronze medal in the women’s table tennis singles competition. That was followed by Nora Monie Atim who won bronze in the women’s discus throw and Linda Angounou got bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles and shot put. Emmanuel Eseme won gold in the men’s 200m finishing the race in 20.16. He broke Cameroon’s 200m record. He won the gold medal ahead of world champion, Turkey’s Ramil Guliyev. Another major achievement in Konya was in weightlifting. Eyenga Mbossi won gold in the women’s 76kg category. Still in weightlifting, Clémentine Mekeugni won three silver medals in the women’s 87kg category. Elisabeth Norah Milanesi got a silver medal in the women’s 100m freestyle swimming. In judo, Cameroon won silver in the women’s team competition. In kickboxing, Kengni Kevine won bronze in the -65kg category.
