"We Intend To Create Schools"

Fai Yengo Francis, National Coordinator of the National Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration Committee (NDDRC)

As the National Coordinator of the National Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration Committee, how do you appreciate the success of some ex-fighters in the DDR Centres in the 2022 GCE examination ?
In the DDR, we welcomed the results with a lot of joy. Particularly because, we feel that despite the difficulties these ex-fighters have, we should continue to show them the way. We should continue to train them.  We have two children who succeeded in the GCE in the Bamenda DDR Centre. One of them had three papers at the Advance Level and the other one hand four papers at the Ordinary Level. In  Buea, we had one of them who had seven papers in the GCE Ordinary Level. This for us is the beginning because when we told them  that we were putting them in school, they themselves were  not convinced. Now, I want to tell you that since the results came out, we have many of them knocking at the doors of their authorities in the Centres and  I think that we will send more of them to school.
I want also to tell you that at the Basic Education level, we have nursery and primary school pupils. Though they are not many. In Bamenda, we have seven children in the nursery and five in the primary school. Recently, I posted a teacher there. In our Centre in Mora we have more than 120 children around the nursery school.  We want to use the opportunity of the results to let the ex-fighters know that the State is taking care of them in all the aspects. Secondly,  to let Cameroonians know that these children are not lost. Thirdly, we want to tell those who are still in the bushes to come out because all the opportunities are there for them.

What special measures have been taken in DDR Centres to ensure that those who are willing to  purrsue education do so without major problems ?
The first measure is that we have been doing everything to convince them that education is good. That no matter what their situation is, it is good to pursue education. The second measure is that we are counting on our partners such as the ministers in charge of education. I want to tell you that in Mora, we already have nursery school created in the centre. The technical ministries are going to support us to educate these children.  As far as measures are concerned we are doing everything alongside the technical ministerial departments ...
