1930: Uruguay-Argentina : Maiden World Cup Final

The game played on July 30 at Montevideo went down into history as the first ever final of the global showpiece.

The hosting of the first FIFA World Cup in 1930 was awarded to Uruguay who had the best international team at the time, winning gold at consecutive Olympic Games. A total of 13 teams entered the tournament with a few notable European nations skipping the tournament reportedly due to the travel distance. The tournament which ran from July 13-30, 1930, had several exciting fixtures but one of the games that will be forever inscribed in history, is the inaugural final of the FIFA World cup. It pitted host Uruguay and Argentina on July 30, 1930 at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo. At the end, Uruguay beat their opponents 4-2 to be the first nation to have won the global showpiece. 
Argentina was coming into the final after having beaten France Chile and Mexico in Group 1 before beating United States 6-1 in the semi-finals. Uruguay on the other hand beat Romania and Peru in Group 3 before thrashing Yugoslavia in the semi-finals to make it to the final. The  final  was a remake of the gold medal match of the 1928 Olympics (Uruguay-Argentina). The host, Uruguay, scored the opening goal through Pablo Dorado at 12th minute.
