Armed Conflicts : Varied Abuses Women Endure

Statistics indicate that women suffer and experience various forms of violence during conflicts more than men.

Women by nature are the weaker sex and thus undergo several human rights violations in situations of armed conflict. They bear the larger part of the burden in every crisis period and the consequences on them are heavier. Women are the most displaced victims during a conflict and endure other penalties like physical and psychological violence, rape, unwanted pregnancy, forced marriages, dropping out of school and other forms of child exploitation. The list of specific abuses women endure during social tensions is enormous. 

Most Displaced Persons
Women constitute the highest number of individuals who are internally displaced persons. Unlike men, they quickly move from their homes and settle in other areas with their children or other members of the family. During armed conflicts and in search for safety, women are forced to flee that settlement area, and most times seek for shelter in uncomfortable places. 

Physical, Psychological Violence 
Rape and kidnap for ransom as well as the sounds of gunshots are events that leave bitter memories in the lives of women. Men at war sexually exploit women, they are brutalised in situations where they try to strike back. Women are kidnapped and used as cooks and caretakers in the camps of non-State armed groups. Some of the horrible things that women experience in these hideouts are terrific to the women folk. 

Unwanted Pregnancy
The fallouts out of rape is unwanted pregnancy or contracting a sexually transmitted disease. When pregnancy is not planned amongst teenagers, it leads to further complications as feeding and taking care of the child become difficult for the mother and child. Infant mortality or malnutrition unfortunately are other consequences of unwanted pregnancies as the victim has limited or no access to a medical facility...
