“I have Instructed For Studies”

Paul Efome Lisombe Mbole Ngale, Limbe City Mayor.

Limbe has been recently hit by a high wave of floods. How regular do these floods occur?
The history of Limbe is characterised with floods and it is because of the topography of the town. Limbe is almost below the sea level. The floods usually occur in the raining season. The most flood affected areas in Limbe are Bota, Gardens, Down Beach, Clerk Quarters, Church Street, some areas of New Town and the road between Cite SIC and Middle Farms. With the last floods, we also observed that new flood areas have emerged. These areas are around Limbe II Municipality. It is caused by the drainage system from the Limbe Omnisport Stadium which ended after the main gate. It was not connected to discharge itself into the sea. So it has caused a lot of problems.

What are the causes of these constant floods in Limbe?
Apart from the floods being a natural phenomenon, floods are also caused by humans. Most water ways have been tampered with. People have built right close to the water ways. Also the way people dispose their waste is disturbing. They dispose their waste mostly in the watercourses and the plastics in the waste block the water channels. When it floods, it becomes very challenging to the people in the affected areas. When I went to the field I noticed that people are going through difficulties. When the floods occur, people leave their houses and look for shelters elsewhere to hide their heads. This time around I gave them the council hall for them to guard their property and most families were sleeping there with their children until the situation got better. So it is a very challenging moment for affected families.

What are some of the measures put in place to stop this disturbing flood situation in Limbe?
I am new in office and I met the situation. ...
