Containing Climate Change : Recommendations For Cameroon

The recommendations were made in Parliament during a workshop to present the Climate Change and Development Report in Cameroon on November 17, 2022.

World Bank experts have recommended that Cameroon passes a national legislation on climate change and called on Parliament to elaborate and implement climate relevant policies.
The recommendations are contained in the Cameroon Climate Change and Development Reports presented in Parliament on November 17, 2022 during a workshop organised by the Parliamentarians Network on World Bank and International Money Fund.  Nabil Chaherli, Programme Leader at the World Bank Group stressed the fact that in the climate change legislation, it will be important to identify the right mechanisms for coordination, involve Regional and Local Authorities and the need to operationalise the inter-ministerial committee that could play an important role in managing the relations between climate and development. The report also states the need to strengthen institutional planning, better delivery and management of human, natural and physical assets that are key for addressing climate change.
The report indicated that Cameroon does not contribute to substantial carbone mission. However, the effects of climate change are palpable in the country witnessed through drought and floods, especially in the northern part of the country. In the report actions such as the proactivity in managing physical and transitional risks that can bring large opportunities, increased investment in the renewal energy sector with the possibility of departing from the current less than one per cent to 25 per cent by 2035 given Cameroon’s potentials.
