Netherlands-Senegal : Late Dutch Show Sinks Lions

The Teranga Lions were made to pay for their sloppiness at the back with two late goals from Coady Gakpo (83’) and Davy Klassen (90+9’).

The Teranga Lions of Senegal slipped to a two nil defeat against Netherlands in the second Group A game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup played last night at the Al Thumama Stadium.
Senegal were architects of their own downfall late in the second half which allowed the Dutch to pounce through Coady Gakpo (83’) and Davy Klaasen (90+9’).
Without star striker, Sadio Mane, the African side started the game brightly as they pounced on a defensive error by the Dutch but Boulaye Dia’s goal-bound shot was blocked for a corner.
At the other end, Netherlands looked to respond with a bright move from Vincent Janssen but Steven Bergwijn could not make the most of it and the Senegalese defense cleared their lines. With Memphis Depay on the bench, Netherlands lacked the cutting edge up front as they flattered to deceive in the final third. Ismaila Sarr’s bending shot on goal was deflected for a corner just at the nick of time by Virgil Van Dijk.
The story of the first half was one of poor decision making in the final third and that didn’t in the second half as the game was begging for a spark.
Senegal’s best chance of the second half did come from some slick play on the left by Ismaila Sarr who laid off the ball to Idrissa Gana Gueye but the midfielder’s fired his shot straight at Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert.
