Morocco Earthquake : World Leaders Express Condolences

On Saturday, an earthquake of 6.8 magnitude hit the town of Marrakech and five provinces near the epicenter, leaving 2,012 people dead and 2,059 injured.


Several world leaders and diplomats have expressed their sympathy and support to the Kingdom of Morocco following the dead of 1,012 people after a devastating earthquake of magnitude 6.8 hit the town of Marrakech and its environs. The earthquake in the High Atlas Mountains is the most powerful in the country in 120 years. The Head of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said he: “Learnt with great sadness of the tragic consequences of the earthquake that hit the kingdom of Morocco”, while expressing his “sincere condolences” to the King, the Moroccan people and the families of the victims. Algeria through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed, “its sincere condolences to the brotherly Moroccan people for the victims of the earthquake.” 
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, of Morocco’s cross-strait neighbour Spain, expressed his “solidarity and support to the people of Morocco in the wake of this terrible earthquake... Spain is with the victims of this tragedy”. German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz said: “Our thoughts are with the victims of this devastating earthquake. Our sympathy goes out to all those affected”. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she; “learned with grief of the tragic toll” from the quake and pointed to “Italy’s willingness to support Morocco in this emergency”. French President Emmanuel Macron said he was “devastated” by news of the quake, adding that “France stands ready to help with first aid”.
