Angola : SADC To Deploy Special Force To DR Congo

This was during an-extra-ordinary Heads of State Summit of the bloc, that took place on Saturday, November 4, 2023 in Luanda.

An Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), has ended in Luanda (Angola) with several Heads of State in attendance. The objective of the Summit under the auspices of Angola’s President Joao Lourenco, was to discuss the deployment of the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC), in the east of the country, in order to restore peace and security. During discussions, strategic directives were formulated for the deployment of the SAMIDRC in the DRC. The guidelines are according to experts, are aimed at guaranteeing the security of populations in the east of the country, where armed conflicts are still a daily reality. The deployment of the special force has been planned for the end of 2023, with member States encouraged to contribute and support the initiative.
The Summit also highlighted the importance of SADC’s engagement in mobilizing the necessary resources to promote peace and security in the region. For this, the revitalization of discussions for the creation of the SADC Peace Fund was discussed, as well as coordination with international cooperation partners. These various actions aim to guarantee sustainable financial support for the deployment of the SAMIDRC were on the spotlight.
