Ghana : Black Stars Yearning For Fifth Title

The four-time champions are aiming to bounce back in Côte d’Ivoire during next year’s tournament.

 

The Black Stars of Ghana are not new in the Africa Cup of Nations competition. Ghana has won the Africa Cup of Nations four times; in 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982. As the first winner of three AFCON tournaments, Ghana obtained the right to permanently hold the trophy in 1978. Since they last won the trophy in 1982, the Black Stars are in desperate need for a silver ware this time around. The trophy drought appears to be too long for the West African side. Ghana aims to bounce back in Cote d’Ivoire in order to make up for the several years in the cold.
The Black Stars of Ghana will play in group B with Mozambique, Cape Verde and record champions, Egypt in the group stage in Côte d’Ivoire. Ghana suffered a shock early exit last year failing to qualify from their group containing Morocco, Gabon and debutants, Comoros. It extended their AFCON trophy drought to 40 years since last lifting the trophy in 1982. Ghana staged a remarkable comeback to secure 2023 AFCON qualification. The Black Stars beat the Central Africa Republic 2-1 at home to qualify for the prestigious competition. Prior to the AFCON, Ghana lost to Mexico 2-0 in an international friendly at the Bank of America Stadium in North Carolina. This match allowed Coach Chris Hughton to assess different tactical approaches and players' adaptability.
