Coach Amir Abdou has unveiled the final roster of players slated to grace the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023. The list was made public on Sunday, December 25, 2023 at a press conference at the headquarters of the Mauritanian Football Federation. Mauritania will play in group D alongside Algeria, Burkina Faso and Angola. Even though the Mourabitounes are still in their third participation, the team is full of optimism. During their last two participations, in Egypt (2019) and Cameroon (2021) the Mourabitounes exited the competition in the first round without winning a single match.
Mauritania qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after a dramatic 2-1 win over Gabon on September 8, 2023. Mauritania had a clean sheet in qualifiers as they finished top of the group I even before the last playing day. The Lions of Chinguetti secured their ticket to Côte d'Ivoire 2023, showcasing their continued progress in African football. The coach of the Mauritanian football team, Comorian Amir Abdou, believes that Algeria are the favourites in Group D of the next Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d'Ivoire. He equally admits the underdogs status of his team. However, he aims to turn the tables this time by avoiding the pitfalls and fears that plagued them in the last two editions.
