AFCON 2023 : Impressive Refereeing!

Despite minor setbacks, the officiating of the 2023 AFCON and influence of the VAR contributed greatly to the success of the competition.
The dust has settled on AFCON 2023, but the echoes of commendable officiating continue to reverberate. This year's tournament wasn't just about on-field brilliance; it was a masterclass in refereeing, leaving even seasoned football actors amazed. Even the CAF study Group largely applauded the refereeing standards at the AFCON. They highlighted measures taken to combat corruption, such as isolating referees from external influences, and assure the public that the referees are well-trained and performing admirably.
Indeed, gone are the days of questionable calls and contentious decisions. AFCON 2023 showcased a new era of officiating, characterized by accuracy, consistency, and minimal disruption to the flow of the game. The addition of VAR proved to be a game-changer, eliminating controversy and ensuring fair play prevailed.
One of the main moments where the VAR took center stage was in the semi-finals game between Nigeria and South Africa at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake on February 7, 2024. In the dying minutes of the game, Egyptian referee, Amin Omar had moved to the VAR screen. He came back to cancel Osimhen’s goal and gave a penalty to South Africa for an earlier foul.
The plaudits were not reserved solely for technology. The on field match officials, were commended for their meticulous preparation and training that went into their stellar performance. Their ability to handle protests professionally, further garnered respect.
