Interview : “Yellow Fever Can Lead To Liver, Renal Complications”

Dr Njoh Andreas Ateke, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Expanded Program on Immunisation.

A yellow fever campaign has been announced in three regions in the country. What is particular about the campaign, and what is the choice of the regions?
The yellow fever vaccination campaign will run from 10 to 16 April 2024, targeting people 9 months to 60 years in Djohong, Meiganga, and Tignere Health Districts in the Adamawa Region, Garoua 1, Gashiga, and Ngong in the North Region and Djoum in the South Region. People could extend the vaccination date, depending on the vaccination coverage. The campaign is aimed at protecting the population from the Yellow fever disease while halting the current epidemic in these communities. The response campaign excludes pregnant and breastfeeding women with children younger than nine months living in these communities.

How often should someone take the Yellow Fever vaccine?
For most people, a single dose of yellow fever vaccine provides long-lasting protection and a booster dose of the vaccine is unnecessary. However, travelers going to areas with ongoing outbreaks may consider getting a booster dose of yellow fever vaccine if it has been 10 years or more since they were last vaccinated. Certain countries might also require a booster dose of the vaccine.

Those travelling out of the country are usually embarrassed by airport medical teams who say their yellow fever vaccination card has expired. Does a yellow fever vaccine expire?
The current yellow fever vaccine provides lifelong immunity. The vaccine is a live, weakened form of the virus given as a single shot. Vaccine is recommended for people aged 9 months or older and who are traveling to or living in areas at risk for yellow fever virus in Africa and South America. So, a valid vaccination card indicates that the person is protected.
