African Senior Fencing Championships : Lorina Essomba Crowned

She won gold in the 22nd African Fencing Championship that took place in Casablanca, Morocco, recently.


Lorina Essomba Mbega, 21, has been crowned African champion in sword fighting (fencing). She won gold in the 22nd African fencing Championship that took place in Casablanca, Morocco recently. She beat Egypt’s Nagwa Nofal 15-14 in a thrilling match. She has become the very first African women's saber fencing champion Hailing from Cameroon. Lorina has been making a name for herself in world fencing. She claimed the title of French N2 junior champion in 2019. After winning gold, Lorina expressed joy with her achievement. “This is a significant victory for me and for my country. I gave my best on the track and I am delighted to see my hard work rewarded,” she said.
Despite failing to qualify for Olympic Games during the 2024 qualification tournament in Algiers where she lost to Tunisia’s Yasmine Daghfous with a score of 10-15, Lorina demonstrated resilience and determination. Later that year, Lorina rebounded spectacularly to secure the African Championship title seizing the opportunity in absence of the favoured competitor Saoussen Boudiaf.
