African Journalists Share Experiences

Media professionals from across the continent exchanged views with the Cameroonian press during the Scientific Conference yesterday July 4, 2024 in Yaounde.
The 50th anniversary celebration of Cameroon Tribune was equally an opportunity for Cameroon media practitioners to interact with other media houses in Africa. This was during the International Scientific Conference that took place yesterday July 4, 2024 in Yaounde on the theme, “Official Press, Political Pluralism and Digital Revolution”. During the conference, journalists from the Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Nigeria, the Republic of Congo, Kenya and Gabon shared their experiences in the profession in their different countries.
Ochieng Owino Rapuro, Chief of Service The Standard Group, Kenya said SOPECAM has long existing cooperation with his newspaper over the years especially in the area of technology. He said the Standard Group celebrated 50th anniversary in 1972 and this year the Standard Group is 122 years old. He said the Standard Group now has two newspapers, three television stations, four radio stations. The Standard Group attracts very good audience and has evolved over the years.
Onuoka Ukeh, Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, The Sun Publishing Limited, Nigeria said Nigerian newspapers have been forward over the years. It started like the rafting and cut and paste and has developed to an industry and it is doing well and contributing in economic development. He said there are more than 100 newspapers in Nigeria with some prominent once like The Sun Nigeria, Vangaurd, The Guardian, Independence New Telegraph and Nigerian Tribune, among others. He said like in the beginning, Nigerian newspapers fought the colonial masters and got independence. “And today, newspapers in Nigeria are still holding government accountable because that is our input,” he said. He said like it is in Cameroon, Nigerian newspapers are challenged. Nigerian newspapers are facing the physical revolution, and the rising cost of production, reduction in achievement and sales and vanishing vendors.
