Activities to mark the World AIDS day culminated nationwide yesterday, December 1, under the patronage of the First Lady, Special Ambassador for UNAIDS.
Government and its partners convened yesterday December 1st, to review the advancements made in tackling the HIV/AIDS pandemic, amidst concerns over an impending funding crisis that risks undermining the progress achieved thus far. The gathering marked the 38th World AIDS Day, observed under the patronage of the First Lady, Special Ambassador for UNAIDS.
At the event, Minister of Public Health, Malachie Manaouda, and other speakers emphasised the imperative to press forward with the HIV/AIDS response amidst global challenges. Dr Manaouda revealed that the global AIDS response has been disrupted by the suspension of funding, notably from the United States, leading to service disruptions in numerous countries and threatening access to prevention and treatment. In light of the theme, "Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response," the Minister stressed that it is imperative for the country to reassess its response strategies. He highlighted the nation's resilience and the mobilisation of communities to safeguard progress and advance the global response.
Despite these challenges, the Minister underscored that the country has actively sought funding and implemented mitigation measures to ensure the continuity of HIV services nationwide. Notably, the country's response plan has yielded positive outcomes, including reduced new infections and AIDS-related deaths, as well as improved life expectancy for those living with HIV. However, Dr Manaouda emphasised that addressing inequalities and prioritising services for vulnerable populations remain crucial. He stressed the importance of planning for sustainability beyond 2030 and mobilising sufficient funding to support these endeavours.
