Buea: Movie Celebrities Join Thousands

The event recognised the strides made by women while reiterating the call for greater gender equality and empowerment.

Thousands of women gathered at the Bongo Square ceremonial ground on March 8, 2026, in Buea to commemorate the 2026 edition of International Women’s Day. The colourful ceremony was marked by march-past, cultural displays and official recognitions. Women from across the regional headquarters of the South West Region turned out in large numbers, dressed in commemorative fabrics and representing various women’s associations, institutions and community groups. The march-past featured banners and messages advocating women’s empowerment, gender equality and greater participation of women in national development. Speaking during the event, South West Governor, Bernard Okalia Bilai, commended the important role women continue to play in families, communities and the nation. He encouraged women to remain steadfast in their contributions to peace, development and social cohesion. Sona Ediage Lucia, South West Regional delegate for Women Empowerment and the Family stressed that women are evolving and very aware on what to do as concerns nation building.
