The measures by the Cameroon General Certificate of Education Board are intended to give the flagship exam the rigour of yesteryears.
The 2026 General Certificate of Education (GCE) practicum phase has seen the implementation of a multi-layered security and pedagogical framework designed to ensure that the "Advanced Level" remains a gold standard of academic merit.
Following observations from the first 48 hours of the session (May 4–5, 2026) in some accommodation centres in the Centre Region of Cameroon, several key measures have been identified as central to the Board’s strategy.
Enhanced Technological Surveillance
The most visible change in the 2026 session is the mandate for increased video surveillance. As evidenced at the Pinnacle of Success Academy Accommodation Centre, Ekoumdoum, Yaounde, they were requested to install additional CCTV cameras. These cameras are not merely for the hallways, but are positioned inside the laboratories to monitor candidates' handling of equipment and to prevent unauthorized communication. This "digital eye" ensures a permanent record of the examination process, acting as a deterrent against malpractice.
The Staggered "Group" System
To manage the high volume of candidates (such as the 156 candidates at the Ekoumdoum center) without compromising social distancing or equipment availability, the Board has utilized a "Set and Group" system. Centers are assigned specific days (e.g., May 5-6, 2026 versus May 7-8, 2026) to avoid overcrowding.
Within a single day, students are divided into morning and afternoon sets (e.g., 28 students per lab session). This allows for a 3-hour intensive practical window with an hour in between for lab technicians to reset reagents and equipment.
Data-driven Anti-leak Protocols
The Cameroon GCE Board has addressed the "neighbor effect" by ensuring that chemical concentrations and masses vary between centers and days. The grading is not based on a universal "right answer," but on the Superintendent’s Specimen Result. Before the exam, the supervisor performs the practical under the specific conditions of that lab. The students' results are then compared to that day's specific specimen, making "leaked" answers from previous days or other centers mathematically useless.
Media, Information Control
The Board has implemented a strict communication blackout at the center level. Supervisors and Principals have been instructed to redirect all media inquiries to the GCE Board Liaison Office (notably located at Lycée Technique et Commerciale in Ngoa-Ekelle, Yaounde). This measure is intended to prevent the accidental release of sensitive examination details and to ensure that all public information is vetted and accurate.
Candidate Verification, Logistics
The Board's timeline for 2026 involves a "last-minute check" protocol. Supervisors are dispatched to centers 24 to 48 hours in advance (as seen with the May 4, 2026 arrival for the May 5, 2026 exam) to verify that reagents are fresh, equipment is calibrated, and candidate lists are accurate. On the morning of the exam, a strict 45-minute "check-in" period (7:00 am to 7:45 am) is enforced to verify candidate IDs and personal equipment (calculators, pens, protective gear), ensuring that no external aids enter the laboratory.
Technical, General Education
The 2026 session marks a simultaneous push for both General and Technical/Vocational Education. By running Woodwork and Food and Nutrition practicals alongside Chemistry, the Board is maximizing the use of Accommodation Centres. Though this requires high-level coordination from center principals to manage the "crowded campus" effect observed at the Amasia School Complex.
