World Book Day: Highlighting Importance Of Reading

This was the spotlight of a talk organised by the Anglophone Cameroon Writers Association and the Department of English of the University of Yaounde I on April 23, 2026.
As part of activities to celebrate World Book and Copyright Day observed every April 23, the Anglophone Cameroon Writers Association, together with the Department of English of the University of Yaounde I, organised a meeting which brought together students, aspiring writers and established writers. Held on the university campus on April 23, 2026, the event aimed to encourage students to embrace a reading culture, engage more in writing and connect with renowned Anglophone writers. The Head of the Department of English of the University of Yaounde I, Professor Stephen Ambe Mforteh, described the book as a laboratory for arts students, especially those studying English modern letters. To him, reading is fundamental in daily life as it helps one understand society better and, to a greater extent, avoid danger. The Vice President of the Anglophone Cameroon Writers Association (ACWA), Professor Nyaa Hans Ndah, called World Book Day the "Christmas Day of writers." He outlined ACWA’s missions, which include, amongst others, supporting creative writers and celebrating Cameroon's cultural diversity. He also urged students to take up writing, to leave their own footprints in the milieu and why not join the association. Some two young writers were invited to inspire their peers to start writing at a younger age.
