Dr Oloumou Jean Pierre, a sworn cyber security and forensic expert on July 13, 2026 in the Yaounde Military Tribunal concluded three days of expert testimonies.
It was a day of grueling semantics, startling retractions, and the definitive dismantling of a major murder theory. On Monday, July 13, 2026, the Yaoundé Military Tribunal became the epicenter of national attention as cyber security and forensic expert Dr. Jean-Pierre Oloumou concluded his exhaustive, three-day cross-examination. Which earlier ran from June 22-23, 2026.
For the past three years, the brutal January 2023 murder of journalist Martinez Zogo has hung heavily over Cameroon. Today, the digital trail left by the victims and the accused took center stage. Laying bare the technical triumphs - and challenges – faced by the State’s forensic investigation.
"Second Commando" Theory Dismantled
For months, a prevailing theory in the Martinez Zogo case suggested that a "second commando" unit was deployed to finish off the journalist after his initial abduction and torture. Dr. Oloumou Jean Pierre used his final day on the stand to completely shatter this narrative. "There was no second commando because the body of Martinez was abandoned in a state that he was just about dying. And so there was no second commando that came and did any other thing."
According to Dr. Oloumou, video evidence projected in court by IT specialist Professor Bell Bitjocka showed Martinez Zogo in such an agonizing, severely mutilated state. With his abdomen pierced and his body failing - that a secondary intervention would have been entirely redundant. On further cross-examination, Dr. Oloumou however stated that the court should completely drop the idea of a second commando.
"Explore" versus "Exploit"
One of the most dramatic clashes of the day centered on a semantic debate over how Dr. Oloumou handled the commando members' mobile devices. Defense lawyers pressed the expert on whether he had properly investigated the physical phones of the alleged killers.
Dr. Oloumou hesitated, causing a notable delay in the proceedings until the Court President and Barrister Ashu, counsel for the Zogo family, demanded a clear distinction. Dr. Oloumou finally defined the two terms: To "Explore" means accessing and reading the messages directly on the phone. While to "Exploit" means utilizing forensic tools to extract, study, analyze data, and generate official expert recommendations.
Dr. Oloumou admitted to the court that he did not "exploit" the commando members' phones, choosing instead strictly to "explore" them.
The Broken Trail
The report laid bare a frustrating reality for investigators: key digital evidence had been systematically wiped or blocked.
Professional Sabotage
Dr. Oloumou confirmed that the two mobile phones belonging to key accused Lieutenant Colonel Justin Danwe (former DGRE Director of Operations) were "professionally tampered" with prior to his analysis. While he noted that data recovery remains possible under expert hands, he lacked the specialized equipment and means to bypass the tampering.
Corporate Resistance
A major roadblock in the state's case was the silence of private corporations. Dr. Oloumou testified that commercial phone companies flatly refused to cooperate with his forensic inquiries, preventing a deeper extraction of call records and cell tower data.
Untampered Devices
Conversely, the phones belonging to Eko Eko Leopold Maxime (former DGRE Chief) and Martinez Zogo were delivered entirely intact. Dr. Oloumou was able to extract all relevant information from Eko Eko's devices.
Clear Texts, Tragic Final Calls
Dr. Oloumou analyzed over 40 WhatsApp exchanges between Lt Col. Justin Danwe and Eko Eko Leopold Maxime around the time of the murder. The expert concluded that these messages were strictly professional, focusing on daily personnel management (e.g., requesting a bus and transport permissions for DGRE agents going for a course with the Presidential Guard in Minkama on the outskirts of Obala in the Centre Region).
Dr. Oloumou confirmed there was no mention of combat operations, war maneuvers, or any orders from Eko Eko regarding the kidnapping or assassination of Martinez Zogo. Furthermore, he found no digital link or conflict of interest between Eko Eko and Zogo.
Martinez Zogo’s Last Footsteps
The trial revealed intimate details about the journalist's final digital actions. Zogo utilized the secure WhatsApp handle "Anabus 2002s" to receive and exchange his most sensitive messages.
On the evening of his abduction - January 17, 2023, at just past 6:00 PM - Zogo attempted to call Martin Savom, one of the accused in the matter and the former Mayor of Bibey in the Upper Sanaga Division of Centre region. The call didn’t go through. Dr. Oloumou emphasized that in forensic science, a vict...
