The Minister of Trade has asked producers and transformers to look for alternative measures to boost the sector
The price of crude palm oil in the Cameroonian market will still stand at FCFA 450 per kilogramme, excluding value added tax, at least for the time being. The decision was arrived at, Thursday June 27, 2017, after a meeting between the Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana and producers and transformers of palm oil grouped under the banner of the Oilseed Crops Regulation Committee.
For some time now, some producers, including palm oil production giant – SOCAPALM, have been advocating the price for crude palm oil be reviewed and increased to between FCFA 550 and FCFA 600, excluding value added tax. According to the advocates of the crude palm oil price increase, the price has not evolved over the past 10 years whereas factors of production have significantly increased. They cited amongst others, increase in salaries for workers, upsurge in social engagements, increase in transport cost as well as a rise in cost of equipment and maintenance.
Going by the producers, who want an increase in price, such a move will permit them to accelerate investment programmes such as extension of farms, replanting and acquisition of palm nut seeds. They argue that the increase will enable them close the palm oil production deficit gap in the country which currently stands at 130,000 tonnes per year.
However, the Minister has rather proposed that alternative measures be sought to scale up production. “The sooner we get to work, the sooner we'll find a solution. Put all the points together and make a proposal. You have a committee to deal with all the problems,” Minister Luc Magloire posited. The Minister’s decision not to increase the price was taken in good faith, with SOCAPALM officials disclosing that they do not blame the Minister for having failed to comply with their request to increase price of crude palm oil.
To the Chairman of the Oilseed Crops Regulation Committee, Dr. Emmanuel Nkoulou Ada Paul, they will quickly draw up and submit to the Minister of Trade, strategies to revamp the oilseed crops sector.
