Running from May 12-17 in Ghana, Cameroonian athletes face the daunting challenge of surpassing past results.
Cameroon is taking part in the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships, which effectively kick-off today May 12 and run until May 17 at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon. The event features top athletes from across Africa battling it out in track and field disciplines, including sprints, middle- and longdistance races, relays, and field events. Ghana is hosting the championships for the first time, proudly welcoming the continent to Accra's athletic scene. The competition is championed by the Confederation of African Athletics, headed by Cameroon's Hamad Kalkaba Malboum. The opening ceremony took place yesterday May 11, 2026. The finest African athletes are converging on Ghana, providing more than enough reason for Cameroon’s 16-strong contingent to stand their ground and hunt for as many medals as possible. This is especially crucial given Cameroon's underwhelming performance at the last senior athletics championship, hosted at home in Douala, which yielded just seven medals; three silver and four bronze; with no gold among them. That was even an improvement from the 2022 event in Mauritius, where Cameroon clinched just three medals; still none in gold. It is thus a wakeup call for those defending the nation's colours in Ghana.
