Human Rights: National Commission Reiterates Socio-political Dialogue
The call was re-echoed as the Commission presented its 2016 human rights report of the country on December 29, 2017.
As part of efforts to the promotion and protection of human rights in the country, the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms, NCHRF, through its Chairperson, Dr. Divine Banda Chemuta, has stated that the holding of a socio-political dialogue for effective decentralisation will facilitate peace and unity especially in the English speaking regions. He made the proposal on December 29, 2017 while presenting the official publication of the 2016 report of the Commission.
Going by the report, the number of complaints during the reference year stood at 1,136. In the same light, the reactions to summons increased significantly. “Out of 303 summonses, there were 241 positive reactions,” Dr Banda stated. The Chairperson regretted and sympathized with the loss of lives in the country.
‘We deplore the loss of lives of many civilians and elements of the defence and security forces. Each life is precious and each region is important and should enjoy the benefits of peace. Million of citizens are caught between secessionists actions and the actions perpetrated by the terrorists sect Boko Haram,” he added.
