CHAN 2014: Libya Wins First Title

They beat the Black Stars of Ghana 4-3 on penalties to emerge champions at the Cape Coast Stadium, South Africa.
The third Orange-African Nations Championship (CHAN 2014) took place in South Africa from January 11 to February 1, 2014. Organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the competition brought together 16 national teams on the continent. The 16 qualified teams were Mali, Nigeria, South Africa, Mozambique, Morocco, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Libya, Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, DR Congo, Burundi and Mauritania.
Mali, Zimbabwe, Gabon, Libya, Ghana, DR Congo, Morocco and Nigeria qualified to the knockout stage. The Eagles of Mali lost 1-2 to Zimbabwe, Libya won Gabon on penalties, Ghana edged DR Congo 1-0 and Nigeria defeated Morocco 4-3 in the quarter-final. In the semi-finals Libya beat Zimbabwe 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw and Ghana beat the Super Eagles of Nigeria 4-1 on penalties after the match ended 0-0.
In the final, Libya beat the Black Stars of Ghana 4-3 on penalties after the game ended in a virgin tie at the Cape Coast Stadium. Nigeria's Super Eagles came third after their 1-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the third-place playoff. A total of 73 goals were registered in the tournament which was the highest goal-number in CHAN history, averaging 2.28 goals ...
